Scott County Highway 16 Reconstruction – 2016

Scott County 16 mapHi all –

Scott County Highway 16 from Canterbury Road to 18 is one of my least favorite roads in Shakopee. It got pushed further into that category today as a school bus went into the ditch. Luckily no one was hurt.

Thankfully, Scott County pushed reconstruction on this project up to 2016 from 2019.

Starting spring of 2016, CH 16 from Canterbury Road to CH 21 will be expanded to 4 lanes with trails and a frontage road for residential. The section between 21 and 18 is being evaluated for improvements. This project is being completed with cooperation and right of way from the SMSC.

Scott County has a project page set up with all of the information for this project at:

There is also an open house coming up on:

Appreciate your posting. Is the City doing anything to ensure that improvements for the stretch between 18 and 21 moves forward at the same time instead of this just being another study? My concern is that if it is not done at the same time then we’re looking at another 10 years before anything changes (believe that’s how old the last study is).

While you can argue for whether there is a need for two lanes each direction on that stretch, not having shoulders that are more than 18 inches of gravel and no separation between oncoming traffic is not safe at 55 mph, especially during the summer months when there are often bikers and joggers on the road as well, and with the development of additional subdivisions.

I’ve reached out to the county a couple of times as well, but I’m interested in knowing what the City is doing to make sure this study becomes more than a study. There currently aren’t even continuous sidewalks for any of the children in several neighborhoods to walk to Eagle Creek Elementary without traveling on this stretch of road.

    Thanks.

Yes, we are pushing for work to be done between 18 & 21. Scott County will more than likely do some work between 18 & 21 and my guess is that it will be 2 lanes plus a center turn lane. New trail segments come on line with any redo of county roads. That will dictate what is done between 18 & 21.
