Severe Weather Awareness – Tornado

2014-SWAWAs you’ve hopefully heard, this is Severe Weather Awareness Week and today is focusing on tornado preparedness.

The severe weather sirens will go off at 1:45 and 6:55 PM today. Use these opportunities to ensure you have a plan at work and at home for your families in case of severe weather. The MN Deptartment of Public Safety has great worksheet about what you do during a tornado event.

Last fall, this literally hit home with my family. An F4 tornado destroyed our family farm in northwest Iowa on October 4, 2013. My Dad, sister and two nieces were safe in the basement while my brother-in-law watched it from a few miles away. Many rural farms were destroyed but miraculously, the 1.5 mile wide monster missed all of the small towns.

The farm is back in action. The machine sheds have been rebuilt, hog sheds are in action and Mom and Dad are back in the house.

As Mayor of an amazing community, I think about the threat of a major event – like a tornado – every day. You always think these things happen to someone else. Make a plan and be 100% sure your family and friends are prepared for a major event.
